So, You Need Braces? You Have A Few Options

Posted on: 27 February 2015

Braces look like they may be some kind of medieval torture device, but they are a necessity if you want to have perfect teeth. There are several kinds available, so you can control the way your braces look and feel. Each of these kinds has several benefits and downsides, so make sure to do your research before you choose.

Removable Braces: Relief in an Instant

If you're worried about your braces hurting, then removable braces may be for you. They aren't necessarily the same as a retainer, which is usually only worn at night or after braces have been removed. Braces such as the clear mouth guard braces are removable and replaced every few weeks as your teeth adjust.

The major benefit of these braces is that you can eat and drink what you want, and if they're hurting, you can remove them. These braces won't work for serious dental problems, but they're ideal for adjusting the teeth of adults who don't want wired braces.

Lingual Braces: Hidden Away Inside

Lingual braces are installed inside the mouth behind the teeth. These braces are completely invisible from the outside, making them ideal for people who don't want their braces to show.

Lingual braces aren't ideal for people with serious dental issues and misalignment, but if you only need minor adjustments, they can work for you.

Unfortunately, these braces are harder to clean and can be more time consuming when they need to be adjusted, meaning you'll be at the orthodontist more often and for a longer amount of time.

Traditional Metal Braces: You Know What You're Getting

The most common kind of braces are the traditional metal braces young children and teens tend to get. These metal brackets are attached to the teeth with wires and are adjusted to push or pull the teeth into position.

Modern brackets work quickly because they use body heat to move your teeth faster. These are the least expensive braces and can even be stylized with colored bands, so children can decorate them if they want to.

Of course, metal braces are the most obvious braces of them all, so if you don't want to stand out, they're not for you.

These are three of the most common kinds of braces, but there are many others. Speak with your orthodontist or dentist about your dental options, and you may be impressed to see what you have to choose from.
