What do you do if you wish to improve your smile, but can't afford it? You can either give up on your dreams or look for a viable alternative. If you opt for the latter route, look for ways of reducing the costs or getting the money to get what you want. Here are a few useful tips for improving your smile without breaking the bank:

Identify the Specific Faults

Few people need smile makeovers, which improve everything or almost everything in their teeth. In most cases, you only need a couple or so cosmetic treatments to enjoy an improved smile. For example, if your teeth are crooked and chipped but not stained, focus on straightening and filling them; you don't have to whiten the teeth too.  

Look For Alternative Treatments

There are different routes to having beautiful smiles; take the most affordable route without compromising on quality. For example, you can whiten stained teeth using whitening toothpaste, over-the-counter whitening gels, or in-office whitening (at the dentist's office). Another good example is gaps between the teeth, which can be treated using dental bonding, veneers (for small gaps), and braces, among other treatments. In each case, compare the treatments and opt for the most affordable one that still gives the desired results.

Have One Treatment at a Time

If you do need multiple treatments, know that you don't have to get all of them at the same time. Consider a situation where you have a missing tooth, a few stained teeth, and gaps, and you wish to correct all of them. Instead of having them all at a go, or in quick successions, work with your dentist to take one treatment at a time with adequate pauses between each treatment to get money for the next treatment installment.

Identify Affordable Dentists

The last trick is to look for an affordable dentist. Just ensure that he or she is qualified and well experienced in the treatments you need. If you have a good history with a particular dentist, for example if he or she has been your dentist for a long time, you may be able to negotiate for favorable rates. Even if you haven't been a loyal dental patient, you can still consult a few dental practices before setting up an appointment with one.

For example, a dentist in an upmarket part of a big city may charge more than another one at a small town even if both have the same level of experience. This makes sense since the former is likely to have higher overheads than his or her small-town counterpart.
