Plenty of people enjoy dressing up in costumes for holidays and parties, including Halloween. These costumes often include false teeth which can easily be bought at any party store and claim to be safe. Unfortunately, this claim can be misleading. Here's why you should consider seeing a dentist before trying to put on any kind of false teeth.
The Claim
The vast majority of false teeth are designed to be adhered with temporary adhesive. These adhesives are usually intended to be gentle, non-toxic, and can be removed easily. However, the claim that they're damage-free and won't harm your teeth isn't always true. Whether or not that claim is accurate depends upon how you wear the teeth and what condition your real teeth are in before you start trying to use them.
The Reality
Although the adhesive used on false teeth is unlikely to damage a healthy tooth, an unhealthy tooth is an entirely different matter. If your tooth is cracked, broken, has weakened enamel, or a cavity, putting adhesive of your tooth could make matters much worse. The adhesive could potentially sink into cracks in your teeth, which could induce pain, inflammation, or further damage to your tooth.
In addition, if you've had dental work in the past, it's not a good idea to use these kinds of teeth. The adhesive can potentially pull out fillings and other dental work, putting a terrible end on your otherwise fun evening out in costume.
Lastly, following directions is extremely important. Many people simply get the gist of what to do, put some adhesive on the teeth, and put them on. Cleaning your teeth, using the appropriate amount of adhesive, and not leaving the fake teeth on for too long are all important parts of avoiding damage and pain.
What to Do
If you want to try and wear false teeth, there's nothing wrong with doing so in and of itself. The only thing you need to do is to visit a dentist first.
Your dentist will take a careful look at your teeth and ensure that they're healthy and intact enough to withstand false teeth. If they discover a problem, you can have it treated so that your teeth will be in good condition when it's time to put on your costume.
