Worried About Sensitivity And Pain After Teeth Whitening?

Posted on: 24 August 2021

Do you really want to have your teeth whitened, but you're worried about the potential for sensitivity afterward? If so, it will help to know the following things that can reduce sensitivity.

Know The Gel That's Being Used

There is not a single gel that is used for teeth whitening, which means that you have some options out there. There are some gels that use a peroxide base to whiten your teeth and others that are peroxide-free. Pay attention to what kind of gel you use for teeth whitening because one may work better for you than the other.

Gels that have peroxide in them tend to be very strong and can give you faster results for whiter teeth. That strength of the peroxide also leads to more sensitivity. If you start with one treatment with a peroxide-based gel and it is causing you discomfort, try switching to a peroxide-free gel instead. These gels will typically say that they are peroxide-free on them, but they also may be described as being made for sensitive teeth as well.

Get Professional Molds Made

There are many teeth whitening packages out there that are one size fits all solutions. It's a generic tray, you put the gel inside it, and then place the tray on your teeth. The problem with these trays is that they will cause the gel solution to get on your gums, which is when you experience pain and discomfort. A dentist can make a custom mold for your whitening procedure, which is going to keep the gel on your teeth and away from your gums.

Don't Use Too Much Gel

Teeth whitening is one of those processes where using more whitening gel is not going to make your teeth get whiter faster. In fact, having too much gel is just going to cause it to overflow from the trays you put on your teeth and cause it to get on your gums. Always stick to the recommended amount so that you don't run into this problem.

Space Out The Treatments

If you do run into problems with sensitivity, know that you do not need to use the whitening gel every single day. You can space those treatments out to every other day if necessary. You are not going to get results as quickly as you otherwise would, but it is going to be just as effective in the end at whitening your teeth.
